Obituary for Alexander James Booth

Booth, Alexander James
Webster:

Died at the Friendly Home on January 11, 2014. He was 88. Al was born on February 3, 1925 in Newport, RI. One of five children of Scottish immigrants, he graduated from Rogers High School in Newport, RI in 1943. He joined the Army, and served in WWII at the European Front with the 289th Infantry Regimen. Al fought in the Battle of the Bulge.

Following the war, he was the first in his family to attend college, thanks to the GI Bill. He graduated from Syracuse University with a degree in journalism in 1949. His first job was at Rochester Institute of Technology in the public relations department, followed by 35 years at Allegheny Ludlum Steel Corporation.

In work and life, Al was known for his charm, quick wit, love of family, and penchant for golf. His passion for golf began as a caddy for the millionaires at the Newport Country Club. He enjoyed cooking, bridge, and his creative writing class at Writers and Books in Rochester. In retirement he chronicled events of his life, family, the war, and friends. His short stories captured his love of life's every day moments and revealed his wisdom and humor. They remain a treasure for future generations.

Al and his wife Henrietta D. Booth (Etta) were married for 50 years and raised their four children in Webster, NY. She pre-deceased him in 2000. Their youngest child, Jennifer Booth Conklin died in 1984. Al was a member of the Webster Presbyterian Church for 45 years.

He leaves behind his son and daughter-in-law, Steve and Fran Booth of Andover, MA, daughter, Susan Booth of Newport, RI, and daughter and son-in-law, Lisa and Corwin Marsh of Rochester, NY. He also leaves behind 5 grandchildren, Gregory Alexander Booth and his wife Hadley, Daniel Steven Booth, Jacquelyn DeBardelaben Booth, Caleb Alexander Mitchell Marsh, and Stephanie Isabella Susan Marsh. He will also be missed by a large, close extended family.
